PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a common file format for exchanging raster graphics (bitmap) images between application programs. The file extension for a PNG file is .png. The PNG format was created in response to limitations with the GIF format, especially to increase color support and to provide an image format without a patent (GIF files are patented by Unisys). PNG files are lossless, meaning they don't lose any detail when they are compressed. PNG files support a wide range of colors including gray-scale and RGB format (which includes millions of colors).
