Setting a Direction

There are numerous functions in which defining a direction is required. When you need to define a direction, an arrow appears on the screen both on the geometry itself as well as in the top right corner of the screen. The direction of the arrow defines the direction of the operation to be performed. The arrow can either be a Flip Arrow that enables you to flip the direction, or a Direction Arrow that enables you to flip the direction and also to define another direction.

Flip Arrow

Direction Arrow

The Flip Arrow consists of the arrowhead and shaft. To flip the direction, click either the arrowhead or shaft.

The Direction Arrow consists of the arrowhead, shaft and the arrow base (ball of the arrow). To change a direction, click either the arrowhead or shaft to flip the direction, and/or click the ball to set another direction. The ball is colored differently, and is smaller than the head. This enables you to tell if the arrow is pointing away or towards you; see the examples below - these images have been enlarged for clarity:

Note: Where the functionality only requires a flip in the direction (for example in the Fillet function), the Flip Arrow is displayed.

Operation: Arrow Body

Result: Arrow is flipped:

Operation: Arrow Base

Result: A toolbar of direction options is displayed, in addition to the axis direction arrows. Clicking one of these arrows will align the directional arrow with it:

The size of the UCS and the display characteristics (opaque or transparent) of the toolbar and UCS can be defined in the Preferences.

Note: In some functions that use the directional arrow, the direction cannot be changed. In such cases, the circle at the arrow origin does not appear and the direction dialog is not available.

Direction Options Toolbar

The toolbar of direction options can be displayed in the following ways:

  • By hovering the cursor to the right of the UCS with the direction arrow in the top right corner of the active file window.

  • By clicking on the base (ball) of the direction arrow in the center of the graphics window. This displays the UCS with the direction arrow also in the center of the graphics window. Hover the cursor to the right of this UCS.
