Like sketches, composite curves are high-level entities and have selection priority over the edges that comprise them.
-
Hold the cursor over the composite curve without selecting it.

Wait until the cursor changes to the double arrow.

Now hold the Left Mouse Button, move the cursor until the desired curve is highlighted, and then release the mouse.
-
Clear the selection.
