Rectangle

Access: Invoke the Sketcher, define the sketch plane and then invoke this function from one of the following locations:

Create a rectangle with square or rounded corners.

The rectangle can be created in Free Mode or Dimension Mode. Toggle the Free / Dimension button as required.

Sketch Free/Dimension Note: You can toggle between Free and Dimension for circles, lines, ellipses, polygons and rectangles, so you can either create these entities without any dimension constraints, or to give preset dimensions on the geometry (which enables you to preview the exact shape before creating the entity).
Pre-dimensioned circles, ellipses, polygons and rectangles also have a center point, which makes it very easy to dimension or reference to the center of the geometry. Additional shapes can be constrained to the first one, or created with their own independent dimensions.

Demo: Press the button below to view a short movie demonstrating the function:

Free Mode:
Create a rectangle without any dimension constraints (default option).
See below.

Dimension Mode:
Create a rectangle with predefined dimension constraints.
See below.

Free Mode

Draw a rectangle without any dimension constraints (default option).

Rectangle using Free Aligned Mode

  1. InvokeInvoke (for more, click Access at the top of this Help topic) the Rectangle Sketcher tool.
The cursor appears in the graphics display area as a crosshair-and-rectangle .

  2. Pick a point that will be the first corner of the rectangle, and move the cursor away from that point. An image of a new rectangle appears.

  3. If you have selected Aligned mode (default), click in the graphics area to define the opposite corner of the new rectangle.

    The rectangle is created.

The following options are available:

Free

Click to toggle to Dimension mode. for more, see Dimension Mode below.

Aligned

Click to toggle between Aligned and By 3 Corners mode.

Aligned

Click twice to define the opposite corners of a horizontally constrained rectangle.

By 3 Corners

Click three times in the graphics pane;

1. The first click defines the first corner of the rectangle.
2. The second pick defines the baseline length and angle of the first side of the rectangle.
3. The third pick defines the length of the other side of your rectangle.

No Rounds

Click to toggle to Rounded mode.

Rounds mode is used to create a rectangle with rounded corners. After you have defined the length and width of the rectangle, an additional mouse click is used to define the corner radius.

Note: You cannot use this feature to create a completely rounded end on a rectangle, a portion of the shortest side to the rectangle will remain straight. A rectangle with a semi-circle at each end is known as a slot, use the slot tool.

1. Click to define the first corner of the rectangle.
2. Click to define the opposite corner of the rectangle.
3. Click to specify the corner radius.

Dimension Mode

Create a rectangle with predefined constraints. Pre-dimensioned rectangles also have a center point, which makes it very easy to dimension or reference to the center of the box.

  1. InvokeInvoke (for more, click Access at the top of this Help topic) the Rectangle Sketcher tool.

The cursor appears in the graphics display area as a crosshair-and-rectangle .

  2. Click the Free button to change to Dimension mode, and set the parameters.

    Free/Dimension

Toggle between Free mode and Dimension mode as required.

    Height

Set the height of the rectangle.

    Width

Set the width of the rectangle.

    No Angle/Angle

Use this button to toggle between No Angle / Angle.

    • No Angle creates the rectangle with the Height axis vertical on the graphics pane.
    • Angle specifies the number of degrees counter-clockwise from horizontal at which to create the Height axis—The center of the rectangle is used as the anchor point.

    No Rounds/Rounded

Click to toggle to Rounded mode.

Rounded mode is used to create a rectangle with rounded corners. Select or enter the radius to apply to all corners of the rectangle.

Note: You cannot use this feature to create a completely rounded end on a rectangle, a portion of the shortest side to the rectangle will remain straight. A rectangle with a semi-circle at each end is known as a slot, use the slot tool.

    Dimension All/Constraint

This toggle option enables you to either display the dimensions with every rectangle created, or to display a dimension constraint on identically sized rectangles.

    Dimension All

Display the dimensions on every created rectangle.
    ExampleExample:

    Constraint

When creating identically sized rectangles, display the dimensions on the first rectangle and then display a dimension constraint on subsequent rectangles.
    ExampleExample:

When creating different sized rectangles, display the dimensions on all the rectangles; as in the Dimension All option.
    ExampleExample:

    Flip Height & Width

Swap the height and width values.
    ExampleExample:

Note: When working in Dimension mode, the last parameter values selected in the function are kept as the default for the next time you access the function.
