Stitch: Options and Results

Access: Open this function from one of the following locations:

  • Click the button in the toolbar.

  • Select Faces > Main Tools > Stitch from the menu bar.

  • Select Stitch on the popup menu if no geometry is selected.

Stitch faces that are separate objects into one object.

The objects must share boundaries. An option is included for healing gaps between objects.

Required Step 1

The following options are displayed:

Stitch Only / Heal and Stitch

This is a toggle option enabling you to perform either the Stitch Only or Heal and Stitch operation. For both of these options, you can check the results of the operation by using the Analyze > Entity Information tool to select the stitched object, and then select the Tolerant geom option, as shown in the examples below.

Stitch Only

On one or more picked objects, if there are gaps that are less than the Max Gap value, the Stitch Only option will close these gaps.

If there are edges that are very close together (within the Max. Gap tolerance), this option considers these edges as a single edge and creates a Tolerant Edge (T-Edge) entity.
Example:Example:

Object with a gap:

Zoom of the gap:

Select the Stitch Only option, pick the object and press OK or Apply in the Feature Guide:

If the gap is less than the Max Gap value, the Stitch Only option will close the gap by creating a tolerant edge.

You can check these tolerant edges by using the Analyze > Entity Information tool to select the stitched object, and then select the Tolerant geom option, as shown in the examples below.

Heal and Stitch

The operation of the Heal and Stitch option, depends on the number of objects picked.

If a single object is picked, this option:

  • Heals: Converts tolerant edges (T-Edges) to accurate edges (edges with no tolerance or reduced tolerance).

If multiple objects are picked, this option:

  • Stitches: Performs the Stitch operation (see Stitch Only).

  • Heals: Converts tolerant edges (T-Edges) to accurate edges (edges with no tolerance or reduced tolerance).

The heal operation tries to heal the gaps between the objects (if possible). This may change the topology of the object.

You can check tolerant edges by using the Analyze > Entity Information tool to select the stitched object, and then select the Tolerant geom option, as shown in the examples below.
Example:Example:

Max. Gap

This is the maximum gap allowed between the selected geometries, when joining them into a single geometry. If the gap between the selected geometries is greater than the Max. Gap value, they are treated as separate geometries.

This is the maximum gap allowed between the selected geometries, when joining them into a single geometry. If the gap between the selected geometries is greater than the Max. Gap value, they are treated as separate geometries.

In this function, this parameter is used by both the Stitch Only and Heal and Stitch options. In Heal and Stitch, this parameter controls the stitch tolerance when healing multiple objects with gaps. The Max. Gap value remains the same for either of the toggle options.

Changes to the tolerance will not be reflected on the screen until the Preview button is pushed.
ExampleExample:

Example Usage:

Two objects with a gap of 0.05 mm:

Using Heal and Stitch with a Max Gap = 0.1, the result is one object with no gaps:

With a Max Gap = 0.01, the result is two objects (each object will be healed separately):

Click OKOK or ApplyApply in the Feature Guide to complete the function.

When completed, the Stitch feature will appear in the Feature Tree as follows:
