Internal Clearance

The Z height at which the cutter moves when repositioning between cuts. Depending on the procedure, the Internal Clearance options my appear as a result of a dropdown list selection or may appear instead of the dropdown list. For example, in VoluMill Pocket, the Internal Clearance Height and Additional Safety Z parameters are displayed without a prior dropdown list selection.

Depending on the NC procedure, one or more of these options may be available.

Absolute

When the cutter moves to a clear level, it will always move to the level of the Clearance Plane.

An additional parameter is displayed if this option is selected:

Absolute Z

Enter the level of the clearance plane. See the Notes below.

Local Clear Height

In Automated Drill 4x and 5x, the Local Clear Height parameter is displayed.

Internal Clearance Height

In VoluMill Pocket, the Internal Clearance Height parameter is displayed.

Optimized

To move to a clear level, the cutter will move to either the entry or exit point for the current region, whichever is higher. The cutter does not necessarily move to the Clearance Plane.

In the Automated Drill, Rough, Finish, Pencil, and Cleanup procedures, the procedure accounts for remaining stock and adds a safety distance when moving over the stock. If desired, an additional safety distance can be applied to keep the cutter even farther from the part surfaces during clearance motions. (See the Notes below.)

An additional parameter is displayed if this option is selected:

Additional Safety Z

This parameter enables you to enter an additional safety clearance, above the default optimized clearance level. This parameter increases the internal safety value.

Additional Safety Z defaults:

Default = 0.0 (in this case the default optimized clearance level is used)
Minimum = 0.0
Maximum = 9999.99

Automated Drill (Safety Z / Height Safety) defaults:

Default = 10 mm (0.5 inch)
Minimum > 0.0

Notes:

  • If the input value = 0, the default optimized clearance level is used.

  • If a value > 0, all internal incremental horizontal rapids are raised by this value.

  • If Round Rapids are used, the horizontal rapids are raised (refer to 0), the rounded arcs are with the same radius but start/end higher (vertical motion is longer by the user value)

    ExampleExample

    The red line is with Additional Safety Z = 0.
    The black line is with Additional Safety Z = 10.

Safety Z

In Automated Drill 3x, the Additional Safety Z parameter is displayed as Safety Z.

Height Safety

In Automated Drill 4x and 5x, the Additional Safety Z parameter is displayed as Height Safety.

Incremental

To move to a clear level, the cutter will move to either the entry or exit point for the current region, whichever is higher. The cutter does not necessarily move to the Clearance Plane
