Toolpaths: Micro Milling

Access: Open this function from the following location:

  • Access the standard Create Toolpath dialog and select the Micro Milling checkbox.

Micro Milling or Microsystems technology (MST) is one of the fastest growing technologies in the area of production engineering.

The demand is mainly from the medical, optics and computer hardware fields where smaller and smaller parts need to be machined with a high quality surface finish using tiny cutters.

The implementation in Cimatron is a toolpath type that is able to hold these special extreme conditions. A Micro Milling icon is displayed in the top right corner of the display area to indicate that you are in Micro Milling mode.

This mode of working creates quality toolpaths for small parts and tools working with extremely tight tolerances and low value input parameters. The available tolerances for Micro Milling are:

MM

0.0001

INCH

0.000004

Creating a Micro Milling Toolpath

To create a Micro Milling toolpath, access the standard Create Toolpath dialog and select the Micro Milling checkbox.

Modify a Micro Milling toolpath in the same way as for a standard toolpath.

If a Micro Milling toolpath was created, it cannot be modified into a standard toolpath, and vice versa.

When you are in Micro Milling toolpath mode, a Micro Milling icon is displayed in the top right corner of the display area as shown below:
