Cutters & Holders Parameters

Cutter Tab – Cutter Length & Assembly Area
Access: Open this function from one of the following locations:
The Cutters and Holders dialog (or the minimized version - the Select Only Mode):

When not editing or creating a procedure, select NC-Process > Cutters > Cutters from the menu bar or select Cutters
in the NC Guide Toolbar. -
While editing or creating a procedure, use one of the following methods (in both methods, the Select Only Mode is displayed):

In the Advanced Mode, click on the cutter name in the Procedure Parameter Table.

In the Wizard Mode, select the cutter button.

In the Process Manager, click on the cutter name in the procedure row (in this case, the Select Only Mode is displayed).
This topic discusses how to set the parameters in the Cutter Length and Assembly pane.
Multiple Extensions, Holders and Spindles can be defined (see Extension Parameters and Holder Parameters). In general, the extension is considered as part of the holder. The definition of both the holders and extensions is similar; both can be created or imported from libraries.
Click the New Holder 
button to display the Holder Parameters tab; click the New Extension 
button to display the Extension Parameters tab.
When Extensions, Holders, and Spindles are defined, the display of the cutter in the Cutters and Holders dialog is automatically updated. When the Holder or Extension checkboxes are selected or deselected, the display of the cutter in the graphics area is automatically updated.
Cutter Length area
The Full Cutter Length, Free Length, and Grip Length values are only applicable when a holder is defined; otherwise they are grayed out.
Note the interaction between fields in the dialog. For example, when changing the Clear Length (in the Cutter area) or adding a shank or increasing the Shank Free Length (in the Shank area), the Grip Length and Free Length (both in the Cutter Length area) are also affected.

Full Cutter Length |
The entire length of the cutter (including the shank if it exists, but without the holder). This is equal to Free Length + Grip Length. When this checkbox in ON, the Free Length and Grip Length values are displayed. |

Free Length |
The length of the cutter that is outside the holder. |

|
Grip Length |
The length of the cutter that is inside the holder. |

Up to |
Show the length Up to any part of the cutter/extension/holder/spindle assembly. As multiple Extensions, Holders and Spindles can be defined (see Extension Parameters and Holder Parameters), this is a dropdown list that shows the length up to the selected stage. The contents of this list depend on the items defined; if only cutter parameters are set, then the list will contain only 'Cutter'.

Extension Free Length |
The Extension Free Length parameter in the Cutter tab defines the visible length of the extension that extends from the holder and must be smaller than or equal to the Total Extension Height (displayed in the Extension Parameters tab). The Extension Free Length is measured from the bottom of the extension. In the Extension Parameters tab, check the Fix Extension Free Length checkbox to expose the full height of the extension and lock the Extension Free Length value in the Cutter tab to the same Total Extension Height. The Fix Extension Free Length option is to be used when the extension is an integral part of the holder and the free length cannot be changed. Changes to the extension height are displayed in the Cutter Preview Pane of the dialog. |
